Differences in GEN 1 screens and GEN 2 screens without pulling dash!!

One of the most common questions I receive is regarding what generation of Instrument Cluster Screen do they have. Tesla is not known for consistent manufacturing, certain year have GEN 2 screens, while others still have GEN 1 screens. I have found that the easiest way to tell without pulling the whole dash out is to look at the instrument cluster surround. If it has a thick aluminum band around the outside, then it is a GEN 1. If it has a thin aluminum band, it is a GEN 2 screen. During a recent conversation with a customer, I realized identifying this was a problem, so I took some photos of surrounds I had, the top photo with the thick band goes to a GEN 1 screen, the second picture is the thin surround to a GEN 2, the last picture is of a GEN 1 and GEN 2 screen, you can see the aluminum surround on the screen of the GEN 1, and the GEN 2 is just black plastic.

Both of the screens were disassembled to determine manufacturing origin, but the top shows the GEN 1 screen and the bottom is a GEN 2 screen.
